A new campaign has been launched by the plastics recycling sector that aims to double the amount of plastic currently recycled in the UK by 2020.

A new website has been created as part of the campaign that attempts to improve public understanding of plastic recycling, and also encourage government and environmental groups to help the industry improve resource efficiency.

Users of the website are able to participate in discussions about current issues associated with plastic recycling, direct questions to businesses within the plastics sector and also gain a detailed understanding about the types of plastics currently used in the UK, where they are found and whether and how they can be recycled. Information is also provided on how the sector is working to improve levels of environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Businesses visiting the site are encouraged to commit to the following challenges:

- Reduce wastage and environmental impact by continuous innovation of lightweight, high performance plastic materials and products.

- Develop new solutions and designs to increase the reuse of plastic products.

- Double plastic packaging recycling rate by 2020 through working in partnership with the whole value chain and all levels of government to facilitate and promote effective markets, technologies and infrastructure.

- Support high efficiency, energy from waste techniques for end-of-life plastics where recycling is not an option.
