David Luke is a national and international supplier of school uniforms and sportswear, employing 48 staff at its Eco Works site in Ardwick.
One of the company’s key successes in recent years has been the introduction of its Eco Uniform range of products, which are made from recycled plastic bottles.
The range has already diverted approximately 5.5 million plastic bottles from landfill to date, with the majority of the eco fabrics accredited externally in order to ensure 100 per cent post-consumer recycled content.
The company’s commitment to strong environmental performance is reflected in its ISO 14001 status, which it has maintained since 2004. It has also been recognised in a number of recent awards, including the 2014 MEN Environment Awards and the 2014 HSBC Global Connections competition.
Resource efficiency support
ENWORKS, which delivers the Business Growth Hub’s Green Growth service, has been working with David Luke to improve its resource efficiency since 2009.
After previous support from ENWORKS identified over £24,000 in potential annual cost savings, David Luke installed sensor lighting in one of its warehouses to eliminate energy waste; fitted sky lights to increase natural lighting; began recycling all plastic, card and paper used on site; and reduced water use by 38,000 litres per year with water displacement devices in toilets.
To refresh David Luke’s resource efficiency credentials, Green Growth carried out a further on-site review in October 2014 to identify new ways to reduce costs and improve environmental performance.
The review identified new potential savings of over £13,500 per year through a range of recommended measures, including:
- Upgrading the existing fluorescent lighting in remaining warehouses with LED alternatives
- Optimising the existing heater controls in all warehouses to reduce gas usage
- Installing solar panels on roofs
- Changing the charging times of the site’s forklift trucks.
Green Growth resource efficiency advisor, Alasdair Dalzel-Job, said: “David Luke is seriously committed to its environmental and ethical values, and it shows through in the clothing they provide and the way they operate.
“Whilst some might stop there, it is fantastic that they are always looking to improve, and with help from the Business Growth Hub they can carry on that journey.”
Mark Woolgar, operations manager at David Luke, said: “Year after year, we’re working hard to reduce our environmental footprint and maintain our position as an ethical company.
“The support we have received from ENWORKS and the Green Growth service has been central to our success so far; their expert advisors always manage to uncover new ways for us to maximise our resource efficiency.”
