The company, which was established in 1843, specialises in business growth, taxation, accountancy, wealth management, IT and HR support for SMEs, Credit Unions, charities and academies.
After attending a Business Growth Hub workshop in June 2014 to help develop its own environmental policy, Hallidays were introduced to the Green Growth service to investigate how it could improve its use of resources and reduce its environmental impact.
The company had already put a number of measures in place to improve its efficiency, such as reducing paper usage by 70 per cent by implementing a document management system, installing automatic lighting sensors and arranging recycling collections.
Following an onsite resource efficiency review, Green Growth experts calculated that Hallidays could make significant savings by installing a rooftop solar PV system and more energy efficient lighting.
Low carbon partnership
To capitalise on this opportunity, Hallidays teamed up with its partner company, Bosci Ltd, a local energy efficiency firm that specialises in renewable energy, heating and cooling, lighting technologies and insulation.
Bosci has also received support from Green Growth to help strengthen its position in Greater Manchester’s thriving low carbon sector, having benefitted from market intelligence, training and marketing advice and sales leads from Green Growth’s low carbon sector development team.
Bosci has now installed a 200-panel solar PV array on Hallidays’ roof and replaced 48 halogen spotlights with significantly lower-wattage LED alternatives. In total these measures are expected to save around £9,000 and 22 tonnes of carbon a year.
Hallidays’ upfront investment in the solar PV system will pay back in five years, while the cost of the LED lighting is expected to pay for itself in just one year.
‘Spreading the message’
Nigel Bennett, managing director at Hallidays Group Ltd, said: “As a company we strive to continually improve our environmental performance, and the advice we received from the Green Growth team gave us the confidence we needed to make long-term investments in our energy efficiency.
“Our solar PV system in particular has been a great success. The system includes a tablet display in our reception that shows real-time electricity production and charts the electricity generated since installation, which has been even higher than we expected.
“The display has already stimulated interest from our visiting clients and helps spread the message that we are a green and responsible company.”
Paul Abbott, managing director at Bosci, added: “There is a perception among some business owners that these sorts of installations are disruptive and difficult to manage, but the process is actually very straightforward. Hallidays’ lighting was replaced easily and the rooftop solar panels took just 2 days to install with minimal disruption to their daily operations.”
