‘Sustainability is important’
First established in 1982, the majority of RSL’s growth has taken place in the last seven years and the business is keen to ensure that its expanding operations are as efficient and sustainable as possible.
“Sustainability is very important to our business”, says Ivy Wroe, managing director at RSL. “We’ve always been very conscious of the materials we use and we want to ensure that we reduce waste as much as possible, which will also benefit our bottom line.”
As RSL’s products are often made and packaged to stock, re-packaging can be required for different customer orders.
However, by installing a can-crushing machine to deal with waste packaging more efficiently, and reducing the need for re-packaging altogether by manufacturing to stock in plain-packaged containers, Claire Scott – part of the Business Growth Hub’s Green Growth team – calculated that RSL could save around £40,000 on waste and packaging costs.
In addition, by introducing reusable and returnable packaging for raw materials and increasing the automation of manufacturing processes, RSL is planning to save a further £16,000 a year in materials costs alone.
‘Leading the way’
“RSL is a great example of a growing manufacturing company that needs to maximise its efficiency to keep costs down”, says Claire.
“The added benefit is that these cost-saving measures are also ensuring that waste and other environmental impacts are minimised. Companies like RSL are leading the way in recognising that sustainability and growth go hand in hand.”
