Founded in 1973, Velden works as a subcontract facility, producing on-time machined components and assemblies for a wide range of industrial sectors from its site in Bolton.
The company has a strong tradition of maximising its efficiency and minimising its environmental impact, having taken the decision to install over 200 solar PV panels on its roof in 2011 to generate its own renewable electricity.
Since then, the company has installed energy efficient LED lighting on site, saving a minimum of £6,810 per year, and has also replaced around 80 tonnes of old, inefficient machinery with modern, more efficient alternatives.
Commenting on its improvements, managing director Austin Kitchen said: “Green issues aside, it makes commercial sense to make such investments and we are always on the lookout for other ways to save energy and improve efficiency.”
To help maintain this level of environmental performance into the future, Velden is receiving resource efficiency support from the Business Growth Hub’s Green Growth service.
New efficiency measures identified by Green Growth for further investigation include, among others, fixing leaks in the company’s compressed air system, altering space heating temperature to match real demand and installing water saving measures to taps and toilets.
In total, the opportunities could save some £27,000 a year, with most of this achievable at low or no upfront cost.
More recently, Velden also benefitted from attending an Environmental Management Systems policy workshop delivered by the Green Growth service, which has helped it to write its own environmental policy.
Furthermore, Green Growth environmental business advisor, Laura Bayliss, has helped Velden to calculate its carbon footprint going back to 2012 to help demonstrate its ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impacts to its stakeholders.
Between 2012 and 2014, the company’s carbon footprint has reduced significantly, despite an increase in production.
Samantha Kitchen at Velden, said: “We are always striving to improve our carbon footprint, but without the expert support from the Green Growth service we would have struggled to demonstrate our progress to customers and stakeholders.
“Not only are we a cleaner and greener company as a result, we are also more efficient and more competitive.”
