BEP Surface Technologies Ltd, Bury - SME (Manufacturing / Precision Engineering)

Bury-based BEP Surface Technologies Ltd has achieved savings of £72,300 and hundreds of tonnes of carbon dioxide, after improving its energy and process efficiency.

The company was founded in 1970 as a precision engineering and surface technology business, specialising in applying finishes to commercial turning, grinding, plating and surfacing products and components.

As an SME manufacturer located in Radcliffe, BEP Surface Technologies Ltd has received free support from locally based ENWORKS advisers at Groundwork Oldham and Rochdale, to reduce its costs and improve its environmental performance.

Savings to date

BEP Surface Technologies has so far achieved annual savings of £21,600, which are now accruing year-on-year, with £72,300 saved to date.

Low-cost improvement projects have included fitting a 60-Watt air pump to replace a large compressor that was being used for air agitation in the factory.

The single pump cost £130 to install but it has significantly reduced both maintenance and operating costs, saving £5,200 and 52 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) a year. It will also help to reduce the site’s annual water bills by reducing mains consumption.

£1,400 a year has been saved by implementing a switch-off policy for a two kiloWatt (kW) heater that is used for melting the glue used for stone polishing processes.

Previously the machine was left on 24 hours a day and seven days a week, throughout the year, but it was only being used for about two hours a week. This simple behavioural change has helped the company to save over eight tonnes of CO2e a year.

Repairing and replacing the insulating lagging around a 6kW immersion heater for the site washrooms, has saved £1,600 a year from an initial investment of £100, and brought annual savings of 9.5 tonnes of CO2e and 17,500 kiloWatt-hours (kWh) of energy.

BEP Surface Technologies has also implemented a thorough energy monitoring programme across the site, to identify normal operational consumption patterns and then set realistic efficiency targets for energy savings.

This has helped to save over £6,700 a year and 40 tonnes of CO2e, from an investment of just £1,500.

Altogether, BEP Surface Technologies has achieved CO2e savings of 710 tonnes to date.

Savings in the pipeline

A further £10,800 of potential annual savings are currently being targeted, following recommendations made by the company's ENWORKS adviser.

This includes opportunities to install infrared sensors in office spaces, high-speed roller doors and optical sensors in the loading bay, to minimise heat loss and optimise energy consumption. This could save at least £800 on annual energy bills and further reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

'Smarter Driver' training could save £1,700 and four tonnes of CO2e a year, by helping staff to drive more fuel efficiently.
