Hahn Plastics, Salford - SME (Manufacturing)

Hahn Plastics, a company in Salford which manufactures products from recycled plastics, is benefitting from both resource efficiency and low carbon support from the Business Growth Hub.

Howard Waghorn, director at Hahn Plastics, said: “Our work actively contributes to the protection of resources and the environment, and the support provided by the Green Growth service ensures that our environmental performance is as high as possible.

“The support has been fantastic: we’ve created a new position in the workforce and found new routes to market.”

Hahn Plastics specialises in mechanically recycling plastic packaging from household and industrial collections into new products.

Its extensive hanit® product range comprises items of garden and park design and complex industrial products, exclusively manufactured in accordance with customer specifications.

Green Growth

Hahn Plastics has been working with the Business Growth Hub's Green Growth service for over a year, receiving support from both its resource efficiency and low carbon sector development teams.

These two sides of the service help to connect supply and demand for low carbon products and services by matching newly identified opportunities to increase resource efficiency with local suppliers.

Low carbon

Hahn Plastic’s work with Green Growth’s low carbon sector team has helped it to identify barriers to growth and implement a growth strategy.

Support provided so far has included market intelligence, identifying new routes to market, building a database of new sales leads and circulating promotional literature to contacts working in Hahn Plastic’s target market.

The service has also introduced Hahn Plastics to Skills Solutions, which has provided free health and safety training for the company’s manufacturing staff and helped to recruit a professional services apprentice.

Resource efficiency

An on-site review from Green Growth’s resource efficiency team, which included a compressed air leak detection survey and a detailed energy efficiency audit, identified a number of areas where Hahn Plastics could optimise its efficiency.

In total, over £25,000 in annual cost savings were identified through a range of measures, from improving warehouse lighting to installing new machinery.

The savings also have the potential to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 140 tonnes of CO2e a year.

‘Fantastic product’

Amy Glover, Green Growth low carbon sector advisor, said: “Hahn Plastics have a fantastic product that is stimulating the plastics recycling sector and eliminating the need for the use of virgin plastic for a variety of outdoor products.

“We will continue to support Hahn Plastics to promote their products and services and overcome barriers to growth as they arise.”
