Annual cost savings of £7,100 a year have been identified at the Ellesmere Port headquarters of Protocol Skills, following an on-site ENWORKS resource efficiency review.

The national vocational training provider employs 75 people on site.

Protocol Skills has already achieved annual savings of £2,900 a year at no capital cost, following a review by a local adviser from Groundwork Cheshire.

Resource efficiency initiatives have included reducing the standard boiler setting by 2.5˚C, saving £1,600 a year on gas bills.

An overnight and weekends 'switch off' regime for equipment has also saved £1,000 a year on electricity, after managers realised that 20 per cent of the site’s power consumption was happening outside of office hours.
 
Water saving devices fitted to urinals and toilet cisterns have saved £310 a year in mains water bills. The company has also implemented a teleconferencing policy to minimise unnecessary travel expenses and further reduce carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions.
 
The company has boosted an existing 'Hate Waste' campaign by sourcing a new waste contractor and starting to recycle paper and card.
 
'Really simple changes'
 
The company’s property coordinator, Nick Biglowe, said: "A lot of people don’t realise how some really simply changes can make a huge difference.
 
"It’s not just about cost savings though – knowing that we’re making a contribution to the company’s environmental performance is great for morale and our customers are impressed too."
 
Managers are now working on a lights 'switch off' campaign and replacing inefficient lighting with low-energy light bulbs, to save £1,800 annually.
 
A full energy monitoring survey and waste management review is also being considered, which could save a further £2,200 a year.
 
In total, Protocol Skills could save £7,000 a year through improved resource efficiency, which would be on top of environmental savings of 42 tonnes of CO2e, 190 m3 of water and eight tonnes of waste diverted from landfill.
