Ribble Packaging, Oldham - SME (Manufacturing)

Oldham-based packaging firm, Ribble Packaging, has achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification with support from the Green Growth service, part of the Business Growth Hub.

Mat Pursall, safety, health and environment manager at Ribble Packaging, said: “FSC accreditation is an important part of the company’s environmental strategy, aimed at decreasing our direct environmental impact and improving the sustainability of our products.

“Feedback from our customers has been extremely positive following accreditation and the support from Green Growth allowed us to achieve accreditation in less than 3 months from start to finish.”

Ribble Packaging, an independent and privately-owned company, employs 140 staff and produces over 65 million square metres of corrugated board annually, supplying a wide range of corrugated packaging materials to different industry sectors.

It has an annual turnover of £21 million and holds the ISO 9001 Quality Management standard and the BRC/IOP standard for indirect food packaging.

FSC Certification

Ribble Packaging began discussions with the Green Growth service earlier this year after identifying FSC certification as a key environmental objective that had the added benefit of generating growth potential and safeguarding jobs.

FSC certification ensures that a company’s products are made from timber grown sustainably and processed in an equitable manner.

Green Growth support

Through on-site and off-site guidance, Green Growth helped Ribble Packaging to identify critical control points for FSC material management, prepare staff for an external audit, review record-keeping requirements and implement the wider changes needed to gain certification.

As a result of this support, the company passed its FSC Chain of Custody audit in April 2014. This immediately led to new business opportunities being realised and it is hoped that the certification will continue to open up new growth prospects going forwards.

‘Positive feedback’

Mat Pursall, safety, health and environment manager at Ribble Packaging, said: “FSC accreditation is an important part of the company’s environmental strategy, aimed at decreasing our direct environmental impact and improving the sustainability of our products.

“Feedback from our customers has been extremely positive following accreditation and the support from Green Growth allowed us to achieve accreditation in less than 3 months from start to finish.”

Next Steps

Green Growth and Ribble Packaging are set to continue their positive working relationship, with a full resource efficiency review of the business planned for the near future.

Green Growth business advisor, Claire Scott, said: “Ribble Packaging is an important employer in Oldham that has shown clear concern for environmental issues.

“I’m looking forward to working with them on an ongoing basis to continue to embed resource efficiency and environmental growth strategies in their company culture.”
