Coleherne Ltd, a white metal lined bearing manufacturer and laser cutting service, has identified £8,800 in cost savings following resource efficiency support from Green Growth.

The family-owned business, which employs 60 people at its site in Hyde, Tameside, has been manufacturing and repairing plain and white metal lined bearings since the early 20th Century. 

It is an approved supplier to all sectors of the engineering industry and its bearings are used for a host of different applications – from electric motors, compressors and pumps to high speed gearboxes, generators, locomotive axles and turbines for power generation. 

The company also offers precision CNC laser cutting, machining and folding services, including carbon steel profiling and metal fabrication.

Business support

In July, Green Growth undertook a resource efficiency review at Coleherne’s site to help identify opportunities for the company to reduce costs and improve environmental performance.

The review identified new annual savings opportunities totalling over £8,800 and 42 tonnes CO2e.

Lighting

Coleherne requires around-the-clock lighting for certain parts of its factory, such as its laser cutting unit. By upgrading existing lighting with high-efficiency LED alternatives, Green Growth found that Coleherne has the opportunity to save £5,700 and 36.2 tonnes CO2e a year. 

Green Growth was able to link Coleherne to three lighting suppliers through its low carbon sector service, all of which have now quoted for lighting upgrades in the laser cutting unit.  

Solar

The resource efficiency review also identified annual savings of over £3,000 and 5.6 tonnes CO2e through an opportunity to install solar PV panels on the factory roof. 

Coleherne is currently planning to install 100 solar panels onto its roof, with work expected to be carried out early next year.

Next steps

Plans are now being made to monitor the electricity usage on Coleherne’s two laser cutting machines. The data gathered will be used to highlight consumption patterns and look at energy usage against production output to identify areas of inefficiency.
