Salford-based engineering equipment supplier, Wilkinson Star, is investigating measures to reduce its energy consumption following support from the Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub.
Founded in 1983, Wilkinson Star imports and distributes engineering equipment to diverse market sectors. It also manufactures a range of air compressors and has a state-of-the-art on-site welding technology centre to provide specialist training to the welding industry.
With a growing proportion of its work coming from large blue chip or public sector clients, who place a higher value on environmental performance when selecting suppliers, Wilkinson Star is looking to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint.
The company is also considering implementing ISO 14001 Environmental Management to manage and demonstrate its progress.
An on-site review from Alasdair Dalzel-Job, environmental business advisor at the Business Growth Hub, identified a number of potential measures Wilkinson Star could take to realise cost and carbon savings.
Of particular interest to the company was lighting, which can be responsible for up to 40 per cent of a building’s electricity use.
Steve Murray, operations director at Wilkinson Star, was keen to review options to replace office and warehouse & external lighting across the 6400m2 site with high efficiency LEDs.
To help select a suitable local supplier, Steve is using the Hub’s Low Carbon Network – an online community of Greater Manchester suppliers of low carbon goods and services.
“Improving our environmental impact by reducing lighting costs is a priority for us”, Steve said.
“The Business Growth Hub’s Low Carbon Network is a useful tool that takes the hassle out of identifying the right supplier for our needs – all the hard work is done for us.”
The company is also looking at other innovative technologies to reduce operating costs and further demonstrate their green credentials.
“The Business Growth Hub’s support is a fantastic toolkit for us to call upon. Not only will the opportunities we implement cut costs and reduce our environmental footprint, they will also help us to attract new clients”, Steve added.
Alasdair Dalzel-Job said: “It’s important for companies like Wilkinson Star to be able to demonstrate the environmental credentials of its products and processes to prospective clients and they are well on board with this agenda.”
